Sanibel Causeway Islands

A man-made chain of islands that stretches from Summerlin Road to Sanibel Island. The islands were built to accommodate the Sanibel bridge, but have become a playground for sailors, fishermen, sunbathers and other beach enthusiasts. During winter and spring months the islands are the region’s top windsurfing and kitesurfing spots. High winds are consistent.

Pros: Plenty of parking. Lots of space for picnics, Frisbee or kite flying.
Cons:: $6 fee for getting onto the islands. Beaches aren’t friendly to swimmers or wading fisherman due to large amounts of shell, the dark, murky waters and strong, hazardous currents near the bridges.
Likely visitors: Watersports enthusiasts and sunbathers who don’t want to swim.
Getting there: Coming from the south on Highway 41, make a left on Gladiolus Drive, then bear left on Summerlin Road, which turns into McGregor Boulevard. Pay the $6 toll for cars ($2 for motorcycles or free for bicycles) and drive onto the Causeway, then look immediately for designated parking areas while crossing the Causeway.
Parking: There is free parking at designated spots along the Causeway.
