South Fort Myers Little League captures county championship

South Fort Myers Little League will add another championship sign to its already crowded walls at Rutenberg Park. The Diamondbacks from South’s junior division captured the Lee County championship with wins against the Hancock White Sox, Buckingham Marlins, South’s own Cardinals and finally the Cape Coral Phillies. "I guess I’ve got to buy another sign," said league president Howard Gold, whose majors and seniors teams have also won county titles in the past two years. Read story »

100-year-old man plays golf on his birthday

On his 100th birthday, Shepard Schwartz, a resident at Bentley Village in North Naples just south of the Lee County line, played a round of golf. While Mr. Schwartz plays golf twice each week at Bentley Village, it is worth nothing that he was born before world war had happened or the Great Depression became reality and not philosophy and other life-changing events, such as the stock market crash of 1929, the Cold War, the Bay of Pigs and the conflict in Vietnam, were history in the making. West of Galway brings Irish sound to local music scene

West of Galway formed about five years ago as a few friends were urged to participate in a Christmas variety show by Mike Joynter of the Naples Irish American Club. The band has grown to five members, including club President Linda Marie Macchia and Naples Fire Chief Jimmy McEvoy. The band plays at local festivals, private events and Fitzgerald’s Irish Pub in both Naples and Bonita Springs. Read story »

Second-graders at Bonita Springs Elementary School got their hands dirty to celebrate Earth Day 2007. Early Friday, Dave Diederich's class helped a crew from the Bonita Bay Group plant three live oaks on school grounds. The Bonita Bay Group, developer of several local gated communities, donated two of the trees and Pelican Nursery of Naples donated the third. Read story »

Nineteen 'golfers' hit links to open disc golf course at FGCU

A new 18-hole golf course recently opened on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus, and 19 golfers played in the debut tournament Saturday morning. Surprised? Kind of like seeing those “undefeated season” women’s basketball t-shirts around campus, huh? We’re not talking about the kind of golf that’s been around for a few hundred years and uses drivers and putters. This is disc golf, a game that’s only a few decades old and uses drivers and putters of the flat, circular, plastic variety that glide through the air. Read story »

As a sales manager in the pharmaceutical industry in the 1980s, Dan Longton spent a lot of time in restaurants around the country. But instead of just eating, Longton said he observed the behavior of wait staff and studied how the restaurants were run. In 1993 Longton used that knowledge to produce a sales training manual specifically for waiters and waitresses. Now the North Naples resident is marketing a tool he has developed to help Florida restaurants hire better employees, and at the same time cut down on employee turnover and employee theft. When Grace Walker recently had back surgery, she could no longer make her weekly trips to the library for bestsellers and biographies. High-schooler Jimmy Washington is receiving treatment for cancer while being schooled at home. His visiting teacher gives him lists of books that she wants him to read. Also, Jimmy spends plenty of time in bed and needs activities other than TV and video games. Nathan Spaulding developed macular degeneration and can no longer drive or read standard print.
