Decimated by illnesses, broken bones and other complications, Citrus Park's synchronized swim team was forced to cancel its annual season-ending show in 2005.

Citrus Park's synchronized swim team held its season-ending show on Saturday afternoon at the park. Performing a piece titled "Scarlet Ribbons" are Joe Sommer, Loretta Meaker, Wendy Zeider and Lupita Gonzalez.

The one-year wait was worth it for about 400 spectators who circled Citrus Park's pool last Saturday to watch the swim team culminate its 2006 season with a spectacular performance titled "Go Light Your World," which paid tribute to individuals and sectors of life that have made positive contributions over the years.

"This is the big bang," said head coach Barbara McCann as she prepared to lead her team into the grand finale which traditionally serves as a fun and artistic farewell for many of the park's residents who return north for the spring and summer.

For the past few months, the team comprised of 19 women and one man ranging in age from 50 to 83, has held practices for 90-120 minutes twice a week, no matter what kind of weather exists.

For example, with early morning temperatures in the 40s two weeks ago, the team never thought twice about braving the chilly conditions to practice.

"We swim whether it's cold or not," said Ruth McMath, a six-year member of the team.

Prior to Saturday's show, the swimmers socialized with the audience. But once the show started, it was all business for a team that cherishes life in the water.

"I enjoy the exercise and the companionship with the girls," said McMath.
