Public meeting on Collier landfill project is Wednesday

Monday, August 27, 2007

A Collier County Solid Waste Management Division public meeting Wednesday will provide information on the proposed reclamation of two cells of the county landfill.

The meeting, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Golden Gate Community Center Auditorium, 4701 Golden Gate Parkway, will offer data on an environmental enhancement project at the approximately 300-acre active landfill at 3750 White Lake Boulevard.

Cells 1 and 2, which are about 32 acres, are near the northeast corner of the landfill. Municipal solid waste was hauled to the two unlined landfill cells from 1976 through 1979.

Some 10 acres of the southwest corner of Cells 1 and 2 were mined a few years later, recovering approximately 50,000 tons of soil suitable for landfill cover and plant growth.

Environmental benefits of an enhancement project would include preventing leachate from entering the water table and removing recyclable material from the landfill.

The project also would improve the efficiency of land use at the landfill, delaying the need to acquire additional land for solid waste disposal.

Anyone requiring special accommodations to attend the meeting because of a disability or physical impairment should contact the county Facilities Management Department, 3301 U.S. 41 East, at (239) 774-8380 at least two days prior to the meeting.
